Teamwork, physical literacy, leadership, and sportsmanship
At York House, we focus on the whole child. Teamwork, physical competence, leadership, and a sense of ethics are a few of the vital life skills that students learn through their participation in the YHS Athletics Program that is designed to support "Sport for Life".
In the Junior School, our students learn the fundamental skills of physical literacy with a focus on fun, general skill development (agility, balance, and coordination), and the ethics of sport. Students at this stage are far less concerned with competitive results and are motivated primarily by the desire to have fun, being with friends, and developing strong self-confidence. To reinforce this, we encourage our students to take part in a wide range of physical activities. As we aim for maximum participation from our Junior School students, there are no tryouts/cuts until Grade 7. Junior Tigers participate in championships and events held by the Independent School Elementary Association (ISEA).
In the Senior School, our athletes learn about sacrifice, self-discipline, and responsibility to their team. Playing for an athletics team empowers them and helps them become better leaders. Our program focuses on enabling regular physical activity as essential to supporting regular sleep, and enhancing mental health and overall physical development (muscular and cardiovascular). Regular activity and healthy lifestyle habits contribute to positive overall physical, emotional, and psychological development. Senior teams compete with schools in the Lower Mainland Independent Secondary School Athletic Association (LMISSAA), as well as with high schools all across the Province. Many of our Tigers go on to play CIS and NCAA athletics, and some have even gone on to compete in the Olympics.
Over 55% of our student body participates on our sports teams, but our commitment to athletics goes beyond playing on a team. We encourage all our students and staff to show their school spirit by getting involved, whether as a manager, official, coach, or a fan. Our goal is to instill pride in YHS athletics among the entire school community.
Our dedicated coaches bring it all together. Their passion for the game and the time they spend with our young athletes inspires our Yorkies to reach their goals and sometimes even pursue athletics beyond York House.
