Physical and Health Education

  • Active Living 11

    This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to various forms of physical activity and the broader sports industry. Through a diverse range of activities, including offsite excursions and partnerships with local community organizations, students will gain practical exposure to different aspects of sports and physical fitness. The curriculum also offers insights into specialized fields such as Sports Therapy, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology, and potential career pathways within the industry. Additionally, students will engage in leadership assessments and develop essential skills for stress management and overall well-being. Active participation and consistent attendance are crucial to achieving the course objectives and ensuring a meaningful learning experience.
  • Physical and Health Education 10

    Students work towards solidifying and enhancing theory of lifetime fitness and team concepts. Nordic Pole walking, flag football, social dance, group fitness, relaxation methods, and an active health unit with an emphasis on personal fitness are introduced. The social emotional learning, substance use and sexual health education program continues with a focus on providing information to develop skills to make safe decisions for themselves.
  • Physical and Health Education 10 - GO

    All Grade 9 students are invited to apply for the GO Program in their Grade 10 year at YHS, which is in place of their PHE 10 credit. The GO Program aims to promote self-discovery, leadership, interactive social skills, as well as a more holistic understanding of the natural world through experiential, adventure, and environmental education. The program is a year-long outdoor education cohort of students who expand their learning by embarking on various outdoor pursuits over the course of the year, both during and outside of the designated class time within the timetable, including evenings and weekends. Through a wide range of activities, the program challenges students in body, mind, and spirit, and exposes them to the many outdoor pursuits accessible in British Columbia. No previous experience is required to apply and all interested applicants are welcomed.
  • Physical and Health Education 8

    Skill development in team and individual sports presented in Grade 7 is continued. Students learn the importance of teamwork and perseverance while honing on their leadership skills. Yoga, field hockey, pickleball, and softball are introduced as well as an Active Health unit with an emphasis on cardiovascular endurance. Health topics such as substance abuse and sexual health education are introduced with a focus on decision-making and refusal skills.
  • Physical and Health Education 9

    Students continue to build on their physical literacy, healthy and active living, and social and emotional wellbeing skills and knowledge. Rugby, strength training, acrobatics, martial arts and tennis are introduced. Health topics such as social emotional learning, substance abuse and sexual health education are built upon with a focus on awareness and harm reduction. Students learn the importance of teamwork and perseverance while honing on their leadership skills.
