Talk on Pluralism with Meredith Preston McGhie | York House School

Talk about Pluralism
with Meredith Preston McGHIE

"Pluralism is like our muscles; we have to keep practicing to strengthen it." — Meredith Preston McGhie, Secretary General, Global Centre for Pluralism & YHS Alum

On October 16, York House School welcomed Meredith Preston McGhie back to campus for a thought-provoking talk on pluralism, organized by YHS Courageous Conversations Committee. Joined by faculty, staff, and students from St. George's School, our Senior School students had the privilege of engaging in meaningful dialogue with a distinguished leader in international affairs.

Drawing on her extensive experience across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, Meredith illuminated the profound importance of dialogue, empathy, and acknowledging the full spectrum of human experience in peacemaking and humanitarian response efforts. Meredith also emphasized the importance of belonging as the key to preventing dehumanization and hate.

Her practical advice for strengthening our pluralism "muscles":

  • Defuse tension with a simple invitation: "Tell me more"
  • Acknowledge our blind spots with honesty and humility
  • Embrace differing viewpoints as opportunities for self-reflection, growth, and collaboration

These are not just skills for the classroom; they are essential tools for navigating an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

Our deepest gratitude to Meredith for generously sharing her time, experiences, and wisdom with our community. Thank you to Ms. Lee, our Senior School Principal, for facilitating this important learning opportunity, and to Sama '27 and Karina '28 for their thoughtful leadership in guiding this discussion with students.
