YHS marks Black History Month with Community Panel
Senior School launched Black History Month with a community panel titled "Pass the Mic: Black Women on Authentic Representation, Code-Switching, and Collective Liberation."
On January 28, we welcomed an extraordinary lineup of panelists:
- Temi Akano, pre-Med student at UBC
- Miselta Ihekwoaba, Community Engagement Coordinator at Hogan's Ally Society
- Destini Maighan, Entrepreneur & Founder of DES Curl Spa Salon
- Dr. Añuli C. Uzozie, Assistant Professor of Teaching and Director of the BMLSc Program, Dept of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC
Together, they explored essential conversations around authentic representation, code-switching, and the lived realities of navigating identity in spaces not always designed for them. From unpacking stereotypes to celebrating representation to tackling imposter syndrome, their insights were both deeply personal and universally resonant.
This was truly a dialogue filled with courage, authenticity, and the power of Black women's voices.
Heartfelt gratitude to our distinguished guests for sharing their insights and lived experiences. Massive appreciation to our Community Service Captains Grace '26 and Zoya '26 for organizing this transformative assembly. And a special shout-out to Chioma '29 for her thoughtful facilitation alongside Zoya '26—proving that student leadership is the heartbeat of meaningful discourse at York House.
