Our Application Process

Application Process

List of 6 items.

  • Step 1: Explore York House

    To learn more about York House, start by browsing through our website. Then, come and visit the school at our Open House events or Admissions Coffee Mornings (throughout the fall months). If you missed our Fall Open Houses or Coffee Mornings, you may request a personal tour. We would be happy to meet you and answer any questions you may have.
  • Step 2: Apply

    Please read our Admissions Policy before completing an online application.

    If you are not a Canadian citizen, or a permanent resident of Canada, please do not submit an online application. Please contact admissions@yorkhouse.ca for more information.

    You will be asked to register/log in to start an online application form. If you are a first-time user of our website, you will be asked to create a login name and password. If you are a reapplicant (i.e. you submitted an application for the last school year), please refer to the instructions below in Step 6: Re-Apply. Current parents should use their existing myYHS login.

    Please be advised that you should create only one application for each applicant to York House School. If you have begun filling out an application for admission, do not initiate another one. If you have any questions, please contact admissions@yorkhouse.ca.

    Siblings: If you are a first-time user of our website, and you are submitting applications for two (or more) daughters, please use the same login name and password for both applications. After you submit the first application, choose “Apply Another Child” for the second application. This will allow our system to link your daughters’ records and inform us that they are sisters.

    The $350 application fee is collected at the final step of the application form. Payment can be made by Visa or Mastercard. You will receive a confirmation email from us once your application fee has been accepted and processed. Please note that if you do not receive this confirmation email, your application has not gone through.

    To view a read-only copy of our application form, please click here: Sample YHS Application Form. PLEASE NOTE, HOWEVER, THAT THIS IS FOR VIEWING PURPOSES ONLY AND AN ONLINE APPLICATION IS REQUIRED.
  • Step 3: Submit Required Documents

    To enable us to get a full and accurate picture of your daughter’s educational needs, please provide all documents and information that may be relevant to our assessment for admission into York House School.

    The following supporting documents are requested to complete your application:
    • Recent photograph of your daughter;
    • Recent photograph of your family;
    • Copy of birth certificate;
    • Two letters of reference (one about your family, one about your daughter);
    • Proof of citizenship status or landed immigrant/permanent residence status for the applicant and at least one parent;

    Applications are not considered complete until all supporting documents are received. Please contact Mabel Lim at 604.730.2419 or mlim@yorkhouse.ca if you have any questions or concerns. If you wish to re-apply for the following school year, read Step 6 below.
  • Step 4: Assessments

    All applicants will be invited to visit the school to participate in our admissions assessments in December, January, and February. Our assessments are designed to determine an applicant’s readiness for our program, as well as her abilities and interests. It is our preference that all applicants attend York House School for their assessments. If this is not possible, please contact Director of Admissions, Mabel Lim, at mlim@yorkhouse.ca or 604.730.2419 to make further arrangements.

    Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten Assessments:
    Applicants come in small groups for about one hour. Applicants participate in activities at various stations, one of which is a one-on-one assessment with a teacher. The assessment consists of exploring an applicant's readiness skills. Parent interviews are a mandatory part of the Junior and Senior Kindergarten admissions process.

    Grades 1-7 Junior School Assessments:
    Takes 1 to 1.5 hours and consists of math, reading and writing exercises (normed for applicant's age). A one-on-one interview may be required if a candidate is shortlisted later on. Please note that Grades 1-3 assessments will only occur if and when spaces open up in these grade levels. All Grades 4-7 applicants will be invited to attend group assessments. Parent interviews are not mandatory for Grade 1-12 applications, but may be requested at a later date if necessary.

    Grades 8-12 Senior School Assessments:
    York House School uses the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) for Grade 8-12 applicants. The SSAT is a standardized test used by independent schools to assess the broad academic skills of applicants. The SSAT measures the basic verbal, math, and reading skills students need for successful performance in independent schools. Applicants must register on their own to take the SSAT: www.ssat.org. The SSAT may be hosted at York House School or at another location according to the dates provided.

    Grade 8-12 applicants are required to complete the Character Skills Snapshot. This is a pilot program, which gives us an opportunity to gain insight about character skills that go beyond grades and test scores. The online questions take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete and are offered at no additional cost for students who have already registered for the SSAT. You can learn more at www.ssat.org/snapshot. Grade 8 applicants must complete the SSAT and the Character Skills Snapshot by December 9, 2018. Grade 9-12 applicants can complete the SSAT and the Character Skills Snapshot no later than January 2019. Test dates can fill up quickly, and it is recommended that you book a spot as early as you can.

    In addition to the SSAT and the Character Skills Snapshot, Grade 8 applicants will be invited for a group activity assessment that takes place at York House School in mid-January; dates to be confirmed.

    Shortlisted candidates will be invited for parent and applicant interviews in mid-January.

    NOTE TO GRADE 8 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS: Please contact us (admissions@yorkhouse.ca) for an SSAT fee waiver before you register for the SSAT.

    If you have any questions, please contact our Director of Admissions, Mabel Lim, at mlim@yorkhouse.ca.
  • Step 5: Decision

    Depending on the grade level, each applicant is notified of the status of her application by the end of January, mid February, or end of March. Admissions decisions are typically finalized by the end of March/beginning of April.
  • Step 6: Re-Apply

    We usually have more qualified applicants than spaces, so we encourage you to re-apply. All applications will be kept on file for one year. If you wish to re-apply for the next school year, please submit an online reapplication by the application deadline. The re-application fee is $250. Please contact Mabel Lim at 604.730.2419 or mlim@yorkhouse.ca if you have any questions.

    Getting started: After logging in to myYHS, you should be able to initiate the reapplication by clicking on your daughter’s name in the top left corner, and then click the green button that says "Apply Another Child". This will prompt you in a new screen to select your daughter's name to begin another application. In the next step, you will be asked to pick the year and grade for which she's applying. Finally, please select “2019-20 Reapplication for Admission” to begin the application. This "Reapplication" is only available to families who applied for admission the previous year.
