YHS Celebrates International Women's Day

York House School celebrated International Women’s Day with a special assembly, a panel discussion and a march in the neighbourhood.

On March 5, our Grade 3s organized an assembly for the Junior School students focusing on International Women’s Day. The Senior School students then welcomed Dr. Julia Hanes and YHS Alum Victoria Lopez to a panel discussion to mark International Women's Day and explore this year's IWD theme of “Inspire Inclusion.”

Dr. Hanes is the chief/lead resident in the physical medicine and rehabilitation program at the UBC and a member of the Canadian Association of Physicians with Disabilities (CAPD). She is also a wheelchair rugby athlete, who had the opportunity to represent Canada at the Women's Cup. In her work, Dr. Hanes actively advocates for inclusion and accessibility.

Victoria Lopez is a YHS alum and the Head of Partnerships with the Scottish Government. She recently received the MBE for her services in bringing vital information on covid-19 safety measures to minority ethnic communities to help save lives in the region.

We are grateful to have these two panelists discuss the importance of inclusion, and what International Women's Day means for them. Through their stories, YHS students could reflect on some of the many positive changes that women bring in different areas of life.

Later that day, students across Junior and Senior campuses were mobilized for a IWD march in the neighbourhood and took the opportunity to consider ways to support the movement for women’s rights and gender equality,
