Senior - Courses
The core academic program at York House School has 7 subject areas: English, science, social studies, mathematics, languages, fine arts and physical education. Every department has a mission statement that informs teaching practices and learning outcomes in their respective subject areas.
Mission Statements
(For specific course details and descriptions, please view our Handbook for Academic Planning)
English
Our English program strives to ignite in students a life-long passion for language and literature. The aims of the department are the same for every grade - emphasizing the development of critical thinking and the imagination, as well as the acquisition of proficient writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Through the integrated study of language and literature, students achieve clarity of thought, fluency and precision of expression, and a knowledgeable appreciation of literature and its analysis.
Science
Our science program exposes students to the major disciplines of science: biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. We emphasize communicating effectively, problem solving, and critical thinking. Recognizing the importance of individual learning styles and current educational theory, we endeavor to create a unique learning climate for young women. We challenge students to make connections between their studies and their everyday lives by appreciating that science is a human enterprise.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we provide opportunities for students to: (1) understand and appreciate the historical development of a wide variety of cultures and civilizations, (2) increase the awareness of international issues, (3) build effective reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, (4) improve their ability to analyze and evaluate historical evidence contextually, (5) develop critically thinking skills, and (6) develop and individual framework within which students can examine past and present events.
Mathematics
We encourage students to achieve their personal potential in mastering mathematics by developing in students their understanding and appreciation for its unique language of symbols. Students are encouraged to become creative and confident problem solvers in recognizing emergent mathematical patterns that solve, predict, and explain both the practical and theoretical. Our goal is to give students the confidence to use their mathematical foundations to pursue their future goals.
Language - French and Spanish
The goals of the French and Spanish departments are to develop in students listening, speaking, reading and writing skills (grammar, spelling, composition) through an eclectic approach to learning. The primary aim is to teach students to communicate at a proficient level so they are well prepared for provincial exams and AP course work if they choose. A secondary program objective is for students to appreciate and respect French and Spanish culture.
Fine Arts
The fine arts program in visual arts, drama, music, new media and textiles provides students with opportunities for creative discovery, collaboration and self-expression.
Physical Education
Physical Education program is founded on the principle that each student will be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Through a spectrum of physical activities, we emphasize the attainment of new physical skills and the growth in self-discipline, confidence and self-esteem. Each student is encouraged to participate in an environment where success is possible for everybody.
