MISSION STATEMENT
York House exists for the benefit of its students. Each girl is encouraged and challenged to pursue personal and academic excellence, to respect and appreciate individual differences and to develop a sense of responsibility to the global community.

ABOUT THIS ACADEMIC HANDBOOK
This handbook contains courses offered by York House School during the 2009-2010 academic year for students in Grades 8 through 12. Its contents inform senior students in planning, not only their graduation program but, as importantly, a course of study that supports their particular post secondary educational goals.

OVERVIEW
The British Columbia Ministry of Education approves the academic program offered at York House School and conducts periodic inspections of our facilities, programs, and courses. The compulsory six core subjects that all students take in Grades 8 through 10 are: English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, French, and Physical Education. Additionally, students are required to take two additional courses that are electives. Students are also required to complete Planning 10, which, at York House School, is completed outside the timetable over two years and begins in Grade 10. In Grade 11, the compulsory five core subjects that all students take are: English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and a language elective. Students in Grade 12 must take an English course and five additional elective courses that complement their intended field of study at university. Additionally, students will need to meet requirements for the Graduation Transitions course.

GRADUATION PROGRAM
The Ministry program is a three-year, 80-credit program by including credits earned by students in Grade 10. Students must now write five compulsory Provincial Exams in Grades 10-12. These include: English 10, Math 10, Science 10, Socials 11, and English 12. Final marks in Grade 10 and 11 examinable subjects are ‘blended’ in the following proportion: 80% school-issued + 20% exam result. Final Grade 12 marks (in examinable subjects) continue to be blended as they always have been (60% school-issued + 40% exam result). Planning 10 and Graduation Transitions 12 are required to complete the graduation program. Students who complete the BC Graduation Program receive a Dogwood Diploma from the Ministry of Education. The school is responsible for distributing the diploma to graduating students.
